Nike Air Max 95 x Sayaka

The objective was to re-center the Air Max 95 in Tokyo street culture by localizing the Nike global theme: Above the Influence. We aimed to move beyond the sneaker’s historical status and position it as a symbol for those who refuse to pander to the era.

Role: Creative Director / Art Direction, Design, Copy Writing

  • In Japan, the Air Max 95 is often a prisoner of its own 90s nostalgia. We had to move the needle from legacy to relevance without relying on the original collector narrative. We also faced the strategic hurdle of translating a Western concept of individual defiance into a Japanese context that typically values harmony.

  • We cast the comedy duo Sayaka based on their uncompromising stance during their M-1 Grand Prix run. They chose their own style over the judges' expectations, embodying the spirit of Above the Influence. By highlighting their choice to remain defiant, we proved the AM95 belongs to those whose heat silences the noise. We enforced an Aesthetic of the Serious Face (真顔の美学) to capture genuine tension and the silence of a true challenger. The visual execution remained minimalist but obsessive in every detail, using direct flash and deep shadows to ensure the Tokyo energy met Nike’s global Visual Center.

    The Result

The final output found a surreal sweet spot (シュールさ) between the talent and the sneaker. By stripping away the expected humor, we reached a one of a kind tension that made the payoff undeniable: When you refuse to play for the judges, 時代は後からついてくる (The era follows you).
